No audio from Avid Audio interface with Mac OS X 10.9 (or higher) on some Core 2 Duo Macs

Last Updated : January 14, 2016

While drivers for Avid Interfaces have been updated or qualified for use with newer Operating Systems, we have reports of no audio output from interfaces on some 2009-2010 era Core 2 Duo Macs starting with Mavericks 10.9.x.  Interfaces affected include Fast Track family (Fast Track Pro, C600, etc.), Mbox 2 and 3 family, Mobile Pre, Eleven Rack, etc.

Some of the computer models reportedly affected: Please note that Core 2 Duo Macs were not tested/qualified with the Drivers released for Mavericks (or later) support.  See the list of qualified Apple computers (this page is also linked from the Driver pages).

Workarounds:
  • Some customers have reported that connecting their Avid Interface to a USB 2.0 Hub connected to the Mac allows their Avid Interface to work properly.
  • Some Avid Interfaces (e.g. Fast Track Pro) might run as class-compliant (with limited features) by uninstalling the driver.
  • Roll back to a previous Operating System (install the older Mac OS on a second drive or partition to switch between Operation Systems as needed).
Additional Notes:
  • This should not be confused with audio issues using Avid and 3rd party Audio Interfaces on Macs that have "Haswell" processors as discussed here.
  • UPDATE 2/25/14: Apple has released OS X 10.9.2 and claims it "Fixes an issue that may cause audio distortion on certain Macs" see http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1725 for more info.
