Sibelius doesn't appear in ReWire

Last Updated : January 2, 2014
Products Affected : Sibelius

Why does Sibelius not appear as a ReWire slave in my ReWire host, for example Pro Tools, Logic or Ableton Live?

Firstly, make sure you run the latest version of your ReWire host (e.g. Pro Tools), and install the latest sound card drivers too. If this doesn't help, quit the ReWire host and try the following:

Sibelius 7

As Sibelius 7 is a 64-bit application, it installs a version of ReWire (version 1.8.2) that is capable of running 32 and 64-bit ReWire Slave applications via a 32 or 64-bit host Environment, provided that:

  1. The host Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) software is programmed to look for Rewire in the new locations used by Rewire 1.8.2 (vs Rewire 1.7)

  2. The host DAW properly utilises the new version of Rewire.

If you find Sibelius 7 isn't appearing in your 64-bit host, it's likely that:

You don't have the latest version of ReWire installed that can handle the 64-bit Host/64-bit ReWire Slave scenario.

In this case Sibelius 7’s install process installs the ReWire files automatically, so you can simply delete the ReWire files from your system via the instructions below and reinstall Sibelius. It's also recommended you reset some of Sibelius' preferences.

It’s also possible that the Rewire.dll file(s) on your system are corrupt, so the process below will ensure they’re deleted and properly refreshed on reinstallation of Sibelius 7.1.3 (which reinstalls Rewire 1.8.2 as part of the process), or reinstallation of Rewire 1.7 if you’re using a host that can’t utilise the newer version of Rewire 1.8.2 that Sibelius 7.1.3 installs.

Mac

Mac Instructions for Sibelius 7 and Sibelius 7 First

  • Delete the rewire.bundle files from here:

/Library/Application Support/Propellerhead Software

/Users/YourUserName/Library/Application Support/Propellerhead Software

  • Delete the PlogueEngine folder from here:

/Users/YourUserName/Library/Application Support/Avid/Sibelius 7

  • Delete the contents of the following folder, if they are there (these are the logs Sibelius creates when it initialises ReWire. If these aren't present, don't worry):

/Users/YourUserName/Library/Application Support/Avid/Common

  • Delete the "com.avid.sibelius7.plist" file from here:

/Users/Username/Library/Preferences

  • Empty the trash and start Sibelius 7 again. To check Sibelius is able to be hosted as a ReWire slave:
  • Click Play > Setup > Audio Engine Options Click both Repair and Clean-up, if you can, and quit Sibelius 7.
  • Start Sibelius and check the Repair and Clean-up buttons are now disabled.
  • Now quit Sibelius, start the ReWire host again and check to see if you can start Sibelius 7 using ReWire.

*If you find Sibelius 7 crashes during start-up, check it's not running in 32-bit mode:

  • Go to the /Applications folder Select the Sibelius 7 app
  • Go to File> Get Info> Untick Open in 32-bit mode Close this window and try running Sibelius again.

Mac Instructions for Sibelius 6 and Sibelius 6 First

Ensure you are running the latest versions of Sibelius and ReWire. You can download these from here:

ReWire: www.propellerheads.se/download/updates_rewire

Sibelius: www.sibelius.com/upgrade

If that doesn't resolve the issue, you should quit your host and Sibelius and do the following in Sibelius:

  • Go to Play > Playback Devices and click Audio Engine Options.
  • Click both Repair and Clean-up, if you can, and quit Sibelius 6.
  • Start the ReWire host again and check to see if you can start Sibelius 6 using ReWire.

If the above fails to resolve the issue, then the Rewire functionality of Sibelius is likely to be damaged under the current user account. The way we've been able to resolve this is to try a full Manual un-installation of Sibelius from the machine, then run the disk repair utility once the program is gone, followed by re installation to a brand new administrator account.

Instructions for this are as follows:

Removing Sibelius and ReWire Manually:

Note; If you can’t find the global/system or user-account “Library” folders on OSX 10.8 as specified during any of these steps, please see this article for clarification:

How to find library folder on Mac

  • First delete any ‘rewire.bundle’ type files from these locations:

/Library/Application Support/Propellerhead Software/Rewire

/Users/YourUserName/Library/Application Support/Propellerhead Software/Rewire

  • Quit Sibelius then delete the specified files from:

/Users/YourUsername/Library/Preferences – delete: com.avid.sibelius7.plist and siblib.plist

/Applications/ – delete: Sibelius 7

/Applications/Utilities/ - delete: Avid Utilities

/Library/Application support/Avid/ – delete: Sibelius 7 folder if present

!Important; you can leave the Sibelius Sounds folder that may be present in the above location intact, this will save you having to install the Sibelius 7 Sounds again, as it’s not necessary on this occasion.

/Library/Application support/Avid/Licenses – delete: Sibelius folder if present

/Users/YourUsername/Library/Application support/Avid – delete: Sibelius 7 folder if present
  • Empty the Trash. This will make sure that Sibelius is completely off the system.

Verify & Repair Permissions:

  • Go to /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility/
  • Double click the icon Select the MacHD on the left and the First Aid tab on the right.
  • Click Verify Disk Permissions (it will take a little while to run through)

  • Click Repair Disk Permissions when it's finished, and allow this process to complete also.

  • Restart your computer.

  • Create a brand new Administrator user account, log into it so you can install and register the software from there. Instructions for creating user accounts on Mac can be found here if you need them:

Setting Up User Accounts

  • Now log into the new account and run the Sibelius installation again, by running the full 7.1.3 installer from here (or from your install DVD if the Program Disc specifies version 7.1.3 on the outer edge):

Sibelius 7.1.3

  • When the installation is complete, run and Activate Sibelius from this same user account immediately.

  • Make sure you use the password that you've created for the new Admin account that you're logged into and have installed Sibelius under when you're prompted for an Administrator Password by the Activation process.

  • Restart your Computer and Test Sibelius under the new account after Activating and see how it performs as a Stand-Alone application.

  • Then Exit Sibelius fully, followed by Starting Pro-Tools under the new account and see if Sibelius can then be recognised in the instrument plugin list for an instrument track and used in ReWire mode successfully.

Windows

Windows Instructions for Sibelius 7 and Sibelius 7 First:

To uninstall Rewire completely from a Windows System:

1. Delete the Rewire.dll files from the following locations if they exist there:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Propellerhead Software\ReWire

C:\Program Files(x86)\Common Files\Propellerhead Software\ReWire
-----------------------------------

2. Now access the hidden ‘AppData’ folder on your PC by clicking Start (Windows icon @ bottom-left of screen), then type the following into the text field and hit Enter on your keyboard (if you’re on Windows XP you’ll need to click ‘Run’ to show the text field first):

%appdata%

When the window opens showing the AppData/Roaming location, you can navigate into the 'Avid' Folder, then into the 'Sibelius 7' folder and delete the 'PlogueEngine' folder inside:

\Roaming\Avid\Sibelius 7 delete Folder: ‘PlogueEngine

While still in ‘AppdataRoaming\Avid’, delete the contents of the following folder too if they exist there (don't delete the folder itself though),  these are the logs Sibelius creates when it initialises ReWire, and will be named 'SibeliusDevice.log' and 'Sibelius.Rewire'. If these aren't present in the location below, don't worry:

\Roaming\Avid\Common
-----------------------------------

3. *!Be very careful with this step, and do NOT delete anything other than the Rewire.dll file specified.  If you do, you could cause other problems with your computer, and Avid/Sibelius Support will not accept any responsibility for such errors.

Now, access the special ‘Windows’ folder on your PC by clicking Start (Windows icon @ bottom-left of screen), then type the following into the text field and hit Enter on your keyboard (if you’re on Windows XP you’ll need to click ‘Run’ to show the text field first):

%windir%

When the window opens showing the Windows folder location, you can navigate to 'SysWOW64' and delete the 'Rewire.dll' file inside:

\SysWOW64\ delete file: Rewire.dll

Or, if you’re on 32-bit Windows it will be in ‘System32’:

\System32\ delete file: Rewire.dll
-----------------------------------

4. Uninstall Sibelius 7 via Start (Windows icon @ bottom-left of screen) > Control Panel > Uninstall a Program.
-----------------------------------

5. Empty the trash
-----------------------------------

6. Reinstall Sibelius 7.1.3:

Download the ‘Full’ Sibelius 7.1.3 installer from here, or if your install DVD states version 7.1.3 in small text on the outer edge, you can reinstall from that:

http://www.sibelius.com/helpcenter/updates/sib7_1_3.html

Run the installer when it’s downloaded.
-----------------------------------

7. Start Sibelius 7 after reinstalling. To check Sibelius is able to be hosted as a ReWire slave:

  1. Click Play > Setup > Audio Engine Options
  2. Click both Repair and Clean-up, if you can, and quit Sibelius 7.
  3. Start Sibelius and check the Repair and Clean-up buttons are now disabled

Now quit Sibelius again, then start the *64-bit ReWire host and check to see if you can start/see Sibelius 7 as a Rewire plugin from within the host Digital Audio Workstation application.
-----------------------------------

*Note; if you’re using a 32-bit host and, after going through the above process, still find Sibelius 7 cannot be identified as an available Rewire Slave by the host Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) software, you should download and install the older Rewire 1.7 package from here:

www.propellerheads.se/download/updates_rewire

*The older 32-bit Rewire 1.7 installer puts the Rewire.dll file in one of these locations, depending on your Windows OS being 64-bit or 32-bit:

Windows 64-bit:

C:\Windows\SysWOW64

Windows 32-bit:

C:\WINDOWS\system32

If you suspect the Rewire.dll file your 32-bit host DAW software is trying to use may be corrupt, then locate and delete it from the appropriate location above and reinstall Rewire 1.7 from the above link/download again.  Make sure your DAW software and Sibelius 7 are both completely quit when you do this.
